about

Epic Prog-Rock homage to our ultimate Canadian Rock music heroes – Rush. It’s a ridiculously long and complex song about tripping in outer space, inspired by Rush’s late 70s epics such as 2112, Cygnus X-1 and Hemispheres. In addition to their music, Ritalin Boy loves Rush’s sense of humour. His young daughter contributed the tongue-in-cheek title, and Ritalin Boy hopes they won’t sue him for this use of Starman in the Fan-Art cover! The lyrics were inspired by Ritalin Boy’s own experience of cutting classes and taking magic mushrooms with school friends before watching the Challenger launch, and subsequent disaster – a space trip he won’t ever forget.

lyrics

Uranus is a Gas Giant

A fugitive psychonaut
Took a capsule they ought not
Disappeared without a trace
Into deepest darkest space
Inside out and outside in
Does it end? Did it begin?
Reaching for the furthest far
Ascending like a falling star

The Challenger slipped the surly bonds
The Voyager touched the face of God

Mercury spins at the top
Venus is way too hot
Mars cries out the battle call
Jupiter rules over all
Saturn rings with delight
Neptune swims in the night
But our path is Heaven scent
Uranus is a gas giant!
-
America’s Messiah was a singer from Tupelo
They launched him into outer space to open casinos
In a pink Cadillac wearing Gold Lamé, with a blond on each arm
All the power and the glory, and the money, looks and charm

The people here are so friendly just look into their big blue eyes
As clear and deep and empty as Nevada test-day skies
They build temples in the deserts where the stars pray for rain
The President asks his Ouija board “are the stars to blame?”
-
The Challenger slipped the surly bonds
The Voyager touched the face of God
The Television mesmerized us all
As we watched the brightest star fall
